Custom Races!
Admin CavemanJoe2010-06-29 23:19:43 [Permalink]
For those of you who are more into roleplay, there's a new option in the Hunter's Lodge to set a custom Race for use in commentary areas. Have fun!
Beds!
Admin CavemanJoe2010-06-29 18:10:56 [Permalink]
You can now buy beds for your dwellings in Improbable Central! Right now you can only buy beds for your own Dwelling; I'm gonna sort things out so that you can buy beds for your friends, but that'll have to wait 'til the morning (it's twenty to four, here!).

(there's nothing quite like writing about beds to make you appreciate your own)

This module went from sketching to planning to execution to testing to debugging to going live all in one night, so to make up for the perhaps inevitable bugs, all beds are at special introductory prices. Get one while they're hot!

Have fun!

-CMJ

URGENT EDIT: Couches are buggy. Please don't place them in your Dwelling just now. I'll fix this tonight, and update this motd when they're safe to use again.

EDIT EDIT: So I fixed them last night, and forgot to update the MotD. Beds are safe! Have fun!
So I've got this friend.

Her name's Jamie, and she's an awesome person and an awesome writer. She attends the writers' group I go to, and one day I was critiquing one of her Flash pieces and remarked that it'd be a really good idea to write a whole bunch of these and then post them on the Internet, say three times a week, and ask for donations. Hell, it'd worked for me, I'm sure people would love to read her stuff and give her money, even if it is just fiction and not tied into a game. And I've got an audience of six thousand or so people who I'm sure would love to see what she has to say - that'd be enough eyeballs to start her on her way to popularity.

Jamie - for reason or reasons unknown - actually listened to me. That's a good way to get yourself into trouble, is that. We hadn't been friends for long at the time, so she hadn't yet realised what happens when people actually listen to the sort of silly bollocks I come up with.

So, a little while ago Jamie comes up to me and says "You're a web designer, right?"

"I'm trying not to be. Why?"

"Well, remember you said I should post my stuff online..."

So, lured by her bartering offers, I ended up briefly coming out of retirement from the web design game (the Island, obviously, being my full-time job these days) and making the pinkest website I've ever made.

So. Jamie's an excellent writer, and has the publishing credits to prove it. I've made her a website. You should go and read all her stories and maybe tip her a couple of bucks.

Because, um... if you don't, then I'm gonna look like a complete plonker.

Jamie Lackey's website!
Things may be a bit screwy for the next few minutes.

I'm going to try to sort out these translation issues we've been having, which means rebuilding the translations table. You might notice references to old LotGD code involving Dragons and Gold! There's no need to Petition these bugs; they'll disappear in a few minutes.

EDIT: Okay, all sorted now. Have fun!
Poll: Global Banter Chat
12010-06-17 05:59:52
A lot of folks have asked me to turn the right-hand chat column (AKA Banter Chat) into a chat area that spans the whole Island, not just the Outpost or world map square you're currently in. Some other folks have said "No, don't do that!" There are pros and cons. Here are some that I can think of: Pros: Everybody's together and can chat whenever they like. It'd be a very active, fast-moving chatroom. Cons: Some people use Banter chat to talk about what's going on in Story chat, and that'd get kinda difficult if the Story chat they're talking about seems (to other players) to be on a different part of the Island. The chat might be a bit chaotic, moving too quickly for a lot of folks to keep up with. We could potentially get around this problem by including an icon or other indicator showing where the chat was posted from - possibly with an option to only show Banter from the Outpost you're currently in. There's a topic in the Enquirer where you can add your tuppence'orth, if you like - but for now, I could use a show of hands.
I'd like a global Banter chat room, please! (37 - 8.1%)
8.1
No, keeping Banter chat on an Outpost-by-Outpost basis is better. (138 - 30.2%)
30.2
I'd like global Banter chat, but only if I can choose to show local chat. (258 - 56.5%)
56.5
My opinion doesn't fit into this poll, so I'll tell you about it in the Enquirer instead. (24 - 5.3%)
5.3

Poll: How do you like the dual-commentary system?
12010-06-04 18:41:42
Pretty soon we'll be having a separate poll on whether or not to turn the out-of-character chat into a single global chatspace - until then, how do you feel about the new commentary system in general?
I like it! (362 - 58.6%)
58.6
I'd change a few things, but on the whole it's okay. (144 - 23.3%)
23.3
I don't like the out-of-character chat areas, but I can just hide them anyway. (67 - 10.8%)
10.8
I don't think there's a place on the Island for out-of-character chat, even if it can be hidden. (45 - 7.3%)
7.3

New commentary system
Admin CavemanJoe2010-06-03 08:55:00 [Permalink]
Hello! We've got a new commentary system in place! I'm tweaking it based on your input. There are a few bugs and kinks to be worked out, but it'll be awesome once it's done. Thanks for your patience!

EDIT: If you're having problems with the mouseover content jumping out of where it's supposed to be (symptoms include people's avatars jumping out all over the page and so forth), please clear your browser cache or press CTRL+F5. That should do the trick. If not, please let me know via the Enquirer, with a screenshot if possible, along with operating system and precise browser version number (go to help->about in your browser's menu bar). Thanks!

EDIT EDIT: Try posting "afk" (without quotes) as a comment. New features yay!
